Countdown to Ghana - Vaccines, Visas, and Vitals

Aloha everyone!

The countdown is officially on.

With less than three weeks left until our departure on November 3rd, the reality of our scientific expedition to Ghana is truly setting in. While our school days are filled with the usual math, biology, tests, and homework, our free time has turned into a wild race against the clock to get all our travel logistics sorted.

🩺 Dr. Google & The Needle Marathon 💉💉💉

Do you know that feeling? You just want to look up what you need for your trip. Three clicks later on the www, and I'm absolutely convinced I won't survive the first few days in Ghana. According to Dr. Google, the country offers a premium membership to the infectious disease club. Yellow Fever, Dengue, Malaria, Typhoid... Just reading about the symptoms made me spontaneously feel kind of sick…

Jokes aside, traveling to Ghana comes with strict medical requirements. First up was the Yellow Fever vaccine, which is required by law to enter the country. But that was just the beginning. We also had to get shots for Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and even Rabies. On top of the vaccines, our Malaria prophylaxis is a top priority. Since Ghana is a high-risk area for malaria, we will be taking daily preventative pills throughout the entire trip. The current status of our immune system after this marathon of shots? 40% human, 60% antibodies!

📄🧩 The Visa Puzzle

Securing a visa for our research expedition involved a lot of administrative effort. We had to submit our passports, proof of vaccination, invitation letters from our Ghanaian research partners, notarized parental consent forms, and financial declarations. Filling out the online e-Visa forms took us several hours of intense focus. After that, we spent a nerve-wracking 72 hours waiting for the digital approval stamp to come through. But we are thrilled to say: We are officially cleared for entry!

What's Next?

Next up on our schedule? Packing! And let’s just say, our packing list looks very different from a normal holiday. Stay tuned for our next post, where we will show you the gear we are bringing to Cape Three Points!
